Giving Back With Your Preschooler

Posted on 08-25-2017

Your preschooler will often express natural empathy when noticing the cries of a baby or seeing an animal in need of care. You can help your child to grow in this area by teaching about International Charity Month and the importance of charity work and giving back. You can learn together about simple ways to support those in need in your community and have a lot of fun in the process!

International Charity Month

The General Assembly of the United Nations chose to recognize the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death, September 5, as the International Day of Charity. Organizations around the world celebrate September as International Charity Month and use this commemorative holiday to encourage and draw attention to the valuable work of charitable organizations and individuals. Community-wide activities and events are often held in conjunction with International Charity Month.

Giving back together

You and your preschooler can give back to your community in simple, memorable ways during International Charity Month.

~Pick out a colorful backpack at the store and then fill it with supplies. You can drop it off at the local YMCA or an area church that does a back-to-school drive for children in the community.

~Join the local Meals on Wheels delivery in your neighborhood, and chat with your preschooler during the drive about how preparing a hot meal can make a difference in the life of an elderly person.

~Grab a couple of trash bags and a few pairs of gloves and join a local beautification group as they collect trash at a local park or by an area lake. You and your preschooler can race to see who fills the bag up first!

~Visit a local nursing home, take along a few favorite books, and offer to hold an impromptu story time. Your little one will love hearing a favorite story and being able to talk about it with the residents!
