The holiday season, as we know, is a time for family, festivities, and thankfulness. It is extremely important as parents to teach your preschooler about gratitude. However, it can sometimes seem intimidating and tough at times.
However, with these simple steps you can ensure that you are teaching your preschooler the definition of being thankful and how to be thankful, without adding more fabulous fall stress to your super busy parent life.
First, start simple. Think about how you would define Thanksgiving to yourself in the shortest of terms. Thanksgiving is a time for being grateful for what you have and expressing this appreciation. This is easier said than done, but this is where the natural amazingness of your child’s innocence comes into play. A preschooler naturally has a simpler outlook on aspects of life than we as adults do, and this in itself, is something to be grateful for and learn from. Starting simple can be as casual as defining gratitude, and allowing your child to list what they are grateful for. Allow them to be grateful for anything- whether it be their grandma, their teddy bear, or their lunch box.
Second, gradually move forward. Focus on things that they are grateful for outside of home and their normal circle- their teachers, classmates, etc.
Like any lesson in life, learning how to express gratitude might take some time. Be patient, understanding, and allow your child to be grateful for whatever their charismatic, wonderfully made thankful heart desires, and most importantly show that you are thankful for them.
