Staying Smart During Flu Season

Posted on 01-30-2016 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Mableton

"Mom, I don’t feel so good.” All parents have been there with children looking up with feverish faces and upset stomachs. Flu season – every parent knows it’s coming and every parent dreads it. Considering children are among the most susceptible to the flu, there is legitimate cause for concern. The good news is there are proactive steps you can take to protect your family from the flu.

What is the best way to prevent the flu from spreading in your neighborhood? -- Stay at home when you are sick and keep your sick children home as well. Taking care of sick children is no easy task, but having an entire preschool or neighborhood contract the flu is even worse. Be smart as you care for your child – wash your hands, and clean off counters and tables and doorknobs that are touched by the child.

To help guard your family from contracting the flu you can also take steps to boost your immune system such as taking a vitamin C supplement. Talk with your pediatrician if you have questions about the flu vaccine that can also help guard against the spread of infection in your home.

It’s never too early to start teaching your children good hygiene! Even with a young toddler, spend some time teaching them how to properly wash their hands. Also make a fun game out of “catching your germs” when sneezing or coughing by showing kids how to cover their mouths with their elbows. When children see this modeled by you they are much more likely to participate. If you have an infant or toddler at home, be sure to keep them away from any items that were touched by anyone who is sick. Babies love to explore with their mouths and that’s the easiest way for them to end up sick.
