Donating Things with Preschool Children

Posted on 04-05-2017

Minimizing things in the house you no longer need and finding a place to donate them can seem like a daunting task, especially with preschool children. Let’s break it down into four manageable steps that can help eliminate the intimidation factor and equip you to give to those around you.

Teach your preschooler to minimize.

Taking the first step is usually the hardest, so just start with a small closet and sift through it, removing everything that your family no longer needs. If you have issues, ask yourself if you’ve used it in the past year. If you haven’t, put it in the box to donate. There’s someone out there that can actually use it!

Decide what’s donate-able.

Once you have removed everything your family no longer needs, you have to decide which things are worth keeping or donating, and which things just need to be thrown in the garbage. If it has stains or is a toy that no longer works, consider recycling it to save the donation location time and energy. If it’s unusable, it’s unusable.

Choose a donation location.

Once you have a pretty nice chunk of items to donate, start looking for places to donate. Try not to keep your piles of things around the house too long or you’re going to start bringing it all back into the house. Choose to donate it, then find a place! You can consider local shelters, a Goodwill location, a family in need, or any local drop-box that charities have set up for convenience.

Let your preschool child give.

Include your little one in the giving process to get the excited about helping others. Show them how much fun it can be to give and help others. After donating everything, go get ice cream together to reward yourselves for all the hard work you’ve accomplished.
