Quality Time with Your Preschooler

Posted on 11-10-2016

There are few relationships more important than that of a parent and a preschooler.

According to the Encyclopedia of Children’s Health, one of the most important aspects of an infant’s psychosocial development is the infant’s attachment to parents. This attachment is a crucial consideration as a child grows and develops. Spending quality time with your preschooler will influence your child’s education and emotional well-being.

Unfortunately, busy schedules can make spending quality time with your preschooler difficult to manage, but there are creative ways to enjoy more time together.

Here are some ideas for parents to spend more quality time with their preschoolers:

  • Volunteer at your child’s daycare or childcare. While your time will be shared with others, you will be able to observe your child and show your admiration for his learning milestones and other activities. Your presence will be a positive enforcement for your child and a benefit your relationship.
  • Join an organization that involves parents and children. Nearly all schools and libraries have opportunities for parents and children to enjoy together. Look for interesting activities that your child will enjoy.
  • Volunteer with your child’s athletic organization. Enjoy supporting your child’s athletic interest. Be encouraging as your child showcases his special talent.
  • Read a book together. Look for a family classic and enjoy reading out loud with your child.
  • Ask your child to teach you how to play his favorite video game. Your child will enjoy the role change as he teaches you the skill of maneuvering his favorite game.
  • Share a meal with just the 2 of you. Spend the quality time asking questions about what your child thinks and feels.
  • Eat together at home as often as possible. Taking a quiet moment to eat together can be the easiest way to share quality time together.

According to a report from the National Parent Teacher Association, children who share involvement with their parents tend to have higher grades, better attendance, and are better adjusted overall. When you spend quality time with your child, the benefits are priceless!
